
Internationally acclaimed Chinese-American pianist, Dr. Gulimina Mahamuti, enjoys an active career and performs extensively in major cities in the U.S., Canada, Denmark, Hungary, Turkey, and China, with broadcasts on radio and State TV. She performed in Budapest at the invitation of the Turkish Ambassador in Hungary, in Istanbul under the auspices of Turkish State Conservatory of Music, and in China with month-long performance tours, in which she gave master classes, lectures and was named Honorary Guest Professor at Yili Normal University, College of Arts. She performed solo piano recitals on Grotrian-Steinweg and Blüthner pianos in Denmark in the beautiful medieval Hune Kirke near Aalborg and Herfølge Kirke near Copenhagen. She played recitals at Carnegie Hall in New York, at Trinity Church in Boston, and performed frequently as guest pianist at universities and music schools across the nation, including performances at Harvard University and at Queens College of The City University of New York.
Dr. Mahamuti performed piano concerti with the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra, the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, and the Harbin Symphony Orchestra in China. Her piano playing was featured at many radio stations, including San Francisco Turkish Radio, San Francisco Community Radio, and Queens College of CUNY online podcast in the U.S., Touch Radio in China, and Istanbul Technical University Radio in Turkey. Her CD recording, Xinjiang Piano Music from Western, features piano music from western China where she came from.
Besides performing, Dr. Mahamuti is frequently invited as guest pianist and professor to universities, conservatories, and music schools across the U.S. and China. She gives presentations, workshops, master classes and serves as competition and festival juror nationwide. She presented at the prestigious National Conference of the Music Teachers National Association and was invited and presented at the plenary session of the Panel Discussion, “A Conversation with Pedagogy Leaders from Around the World,” at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in Chicago. Published in major music journals in China, including the People's Music, Dr. Mahamuti has written articles on piano education, pedagogy, and performance practice. Her articles were published on multiple occasions on Clavier Companion, a leading piano pedagogy journal in the U.S, and one of her articles was also translated into Italian and appears in Didattica.
The first Uyghur in China to receive a Doctorate of Musical Arts in piano performance from the U.S, Dr. Mahamuti was interviewed frequently by China newspapers and China State TV, where her performances were broadcast on multiple occasions. She was featured in a two-part TV series on Karamay TV (China). Her life story -- from her first piano lesson in Karamay at age eight and winning her first competition at age nine to earning her doctorate in the U.S. -- was the subject of a TV documentary in Gansu Province Public TV.
Dr. Mahamuti lives in Freeport, Maine with her husband, Dr. D. B. “Zoon” Nguyen, a radiation oncologist, and their twin boys, Jules and Verne. Before moving to the beautiful state of Maine in May of 2018, she and her family lived in Ohio for eleven years. She is a nationally certified teacher of music in piano and is the President of Maine Music Teachers Association. She previously served on the boards of OhioMTA, where she was the piano workshop chair of the Central East District of OhioMTA, the chairperson of the Richland County Chapter of OhioMTA, and the State of Ohio Coordinator of the MTNA Junior/Senior Performance Competitions. She was also a board member of the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs (OFMC) and chaired the Student/Collegiate Auditions Award for the entire state of Ohio. With numerous honors, fellowships, and awards, Dr. Mahamuti held memberships in the College Music Society, Missouri and Kansas City MTA, Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Kappa Lambda Honors Societies.
With 17-year collegiate teaching experience, Dr. Mahamuti taught as an Assistant Professor of music at Ohio Wesleyan University and previously taught piano pedagogy at Capital University. She taught applied piano and class piano at University Missouri-Kansas City and Pittsburg State University as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Before coming to the United State, she was a full-time piano faculty member at the School of Music of Northwest University for Nationalities (China) and was an Honorary Guest Professor at Yili Normal University College of Arts (China). She owned and successfully operated piano studios in three different major cities in China, where her students won Asian and domestic China piano competitions. Because of her piano students' achievements in China, she received the Excellent Piano Teacher Award in The First National Kawai Piano Competition (2005) and in The Second Toyama Asian Young Artist Piano Competition (2003).
Dr. Mahamuti teaches private piano to students of a wide range of ages. Her private piano students in the U.S. have been First-Prize winners at various piano competitions. Because of their achievements, she and her students were recognized by the Ohio House of Representative multiple times. Several of her piano students are now pursuing piano performance majors for their undergraduate and graduate degrees at conservatories and music schools in the U.S. and abroad.
